Rinnai Replacement Surge Protector 26i/E (P26IV-701) The surge protector on a Rinnai Infinity 26i or E-series water heater is a small sub-PCB fitted near the main control board, sitting in the power input circuit ahead of the transformer and the rest of the electronics. Its job is to absorb voltage spikes and power surges before they reach the PCB and transformer, protecting the more expensive components downstream. Rinnai's own service documentation for the 26i sets out a straightforward diagnostic check: if there's incoming mains voltage at the surge protector but no voltage coming out the other side, the surge protector has failed and needs replacing.
